“Sustainable Ramen” was presented by our CTO, Dr. Suzuki, at the Global Algae Summit (GAS) 2023 in Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - August 17, 2023 - On the 17th of this month, Euglena Co., Ltd. unveiled its forward-looking creation, "Sustainable Ramen," at the inaugural Global Algae Summit (GAS) 2023 held in Kuala Lumpur. A comprehensive explanation of this product was presented in a poster format by our CTO, Dr. Suzuki.

■What is Sustainable Ramen?

"Sustainable Ramen" is a groundbreaking creation that not only contributes to human health but also promotes a healthier planet. In recent times, the concept of "Planetary Boundaries" has gained significant attention, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a delicate balance for the well-being and stability of our planet.

This innovative ramen aims to achieve "Planetary Health," preserving Earth's harmony while providing nutritional richness. Composed entirely of ingredients that can be cultivated on the lunar surface, this ramen is a testament to efficient resource utilization. For instance, the use of Aurantiochytrium, microalgae with fish-like flavors, in the soup showcases its potential to recycle lunar wastewater for production.

Moreover, "Sustainable Ramen" is a vegan product, crafted without any animal-derived ingredients. Beyond being low in calories, it is an embodiment of planetary well-being as it significantly reduces the environmental footprint associated with its production.

■Sustainable Ramen's Ingredients Showcase

・Soup: Aurantiochytrium

A very small type of algae with a diameter of about 5-20 micrometers. Research is underway to cultivate it in space. Nearly 20% of its cell weight is DHA, which is abundant in fish oil, and it can efficiently supply essential fatty acids. The taste has a strong seafood flavor.

・Noodles: Kamut wheat

An ancestor of durum wheat cultivated about 6,000 years ago, which is about twice the size of modern wheat. It possesses a strong life force and can be produced with high quality without relying on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It is currently grown in the Great Plains of the U.S. where rainfall is low. It has higher nutritional value than common wheat in terms of vitamins, minerals, and protein.

・"Char-siu pork," roast pork: NEXT Euglena Yakiniku EX

Next Meats is a Japanese start-up company operating in the field of meat substitutes using soybeans. This special product is made by adding Euglena, microalgae that can be cultured in space, to meat substitutes, ensuring a balanced intake of nutrients such as protein, vitamins, and minerals.

・Vegetables: Opuntia

The stems of a cactus called nopal, cultivated in South America and the Mediterranean Sea, are used. It is also considered a superfood containing nutrients from both green and yellow vegetables and fruits. Additionally, it is used to prevent desertification and soil erosion.

■Leading the Way in Solving ASEAN's Health Challenges

We have been primarily focused on producing Euglena in Japan to address health issues in the country. Looking ahead, we aspire to tackle the health challenges of ASEAN nations. To achieve this, we recognize the need to engage in industry-academia collaborations across ASEAN countries based on open innovation and bring our products to the market. We have already initiated the introduction of Green Tempe (Tempe with added Euglena powder) in Indonesia and Euglena-infused drink powder in Malaysia. Moving forward, Euglena Co., Ltd. will continue to be at the forefront of innovation to address global social issues and realize "Planetary Health."
