MJIIT (Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology) and Euglena Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Revenus, successfully hosted the interactive learning event “Euglena for ALL,” centered around the exploration of Euglena, a type of microalgae!
■About "Euglena for ALL"
From November 29th to December 1st, 2019, Euglena Co., Ltd. conducted an experiential learning event centered on Euglena microalgae at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT). The event, titled "Euglena for ALL," was part of the "NEST Camp Program" (organized by Leave a Nest Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.), a three-day program aimed at providing Malaysian middle and high school students with an opportunity to view scientific research from a researcher's perspective. Participants engaged in observing various microalgae, extracted from water samples collected in Malaysia, and gained an understanding of the unique characteristics of Euglena as a microalgae species by studying its motility.
■Workshop Highlights
This workshop brought together around 25 students aged 13 to 15 from schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. The participants explored examples of societal challenges addressed by scientific and technological solutions, ranging from local to global issues. The event began with guidance from the team leader, Mr. Suzuki Kengo, who is also the Executive Officer of Research and Development at Euglena Co., Ltd. The students were involved in the collection and observation of the microalgae Euglena.
Given the environmental conditions and the growth potential of microalgae in Malaysia's tropical climate, water samples were collected from various locations across three states: Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan. Participants used microscopes to observe Euglena, gaining insights into its structural and motility characteristics. Moreover, participants identified Euglena in the collected water samples, discerning its presence in different samples.
Subsequently, attendees had the opportunity to sample products, including Euglena-based products sourced from Ishigaki, Japan. This tasting experience provided insights into the actual taste and health benefits of Euglena products. Towards the conclusion of the workshop, discussions encompassed Euglena Co., Ltd.'s mission, their commitment to addressing societal challenges, and the story behind their establishment.
Through "Euglena for ALL," participants were exposed to the passion of researchers dedicated to uncovering the immense potential within the minute microalgae Euglena. The event aimed to inspire Malaysian middle and high school students to adopt a researcher's perspective and engage with global challenges. Going forward, the research team intends to further advance bio-related research and development and foster the growth of local university students and researchers.
