Euglena-lab Event Report: ASEAN GX Sustainability Forum

On October 1, 2025, Euglena Co., Ltd. participated in the ASEAN GX Sustainability Forum held at Plaza Hap Seng, Kuala Lumpur. The Forum brought together policymakers, corporate leaders, and innovators from across ASEAN and Japan to discuss strategies for advancing decarbonization, sustainable food systems, and green technologies.

Within the program, Dr. Kengo Suzuki, co-founder of Euglena Co., Ltd. joined the Fireside Chat on Sustainable Food & Agriculture moderated by Boon Lee Chiam (CEO, Sustainable Food Asia). Other panelists included Jean Tan (Chief Ecosystem Officer, Atoz Carbon), highlighting innovations in microalgae and regenerative farming.

Dr. Kengo Suzuki’s Key Messages

During the discussion, Dr. Kengo emphasized Euglena’s role in addressing health, nutrition, and planetary sustainability through microalgae-based innovations:

  • Meal Replacement with Euglena: He shared the vision of incorporating Euglena into nutritionally balanced meal replacements that can support healthier lifestyles in Malaysia and beyond.
  • Green Tempe for Protein Security: By combining microalgae with traditional fermentation techniques, Dr. Kengo presented the development of “Green Tempe,” a novel plant-based protein source that bridges local food heritage with cutting-edge biotechnology.
  • Microbial Circulation for Space: Looking toward the future, he outlined a concept where Euglena and other fermentative microorganisms enable closed-loop material circulation systems—vital for sustaining human life in space habitats.

These perspectives positioned Euglena not only as a driver of immediate health and food security solutions in ASEAN, but also as a pioneer in long-term bio-based infrastructure for humanity’s expansion beyond Earth.

Reflections and Takeaways

The session reinforced the importance of Tech × Tradition, showing how heritage foods like tempeh can be reimagined with biotechnology to meet modern protein demands. It also underlined ASEAN’s potential as a proving ground for sustainable, scalable innovations in food systems.

For Euglena, this forum was a platform to reaffirm its mission: contributing to human health, environmental regeneration, and ultimately, interplanetary sustainability through microalgae innovation.
