From November 29th to December 1st, Euglena Co., Ltd. conducted an interactive learning event centered around Euglena, a type of microalgae, at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT). The event, "Euglena for ALL," was part of the "NEST Camp Program," a three-day initiative designed by  Leave a Nest Malaysia to provide middle and high school students in Malaysia with a perspective into the world of researchers. Participating students had the opportunity to observe various microalgae species extracted from water samples collected in Malaysia and gained an understanding of the uniqueness of Euglena as a microalgae through observing its movement.

Workshop Highlights

Approximately 25 students aged 13 to 15 from schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur gathered for the workshop. They learned about a range of scientific and technological challenges solved on both local and global scales. The workshop commenced with guidance from Euglena Co., Ltd.'s Executive Officer in charge of Research and Development, Kengo Suzuki, who is also the team leader. Under his direction, students engaged in the collection and observation of the microalgae species known as Euglena.

Given the environmental conditions and the potential for microalgae growth in Malaysia's tropical climate, water samples were gathered from three different states: Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan. Using microscopes, participants observed Euglena, gaining insights into its structural characteristics and movement patterns. They were able to identify the presence of Euglena within the collected water samples.

Subsequently, participants had the opportunity to sample products containing Euglena sourced from Ishigaki Island. This allowed them to learn about the actual taste and health benefits associated with Euglena consumption. The workshop concluded with discussions on Euglena Co., Ltd.'s mission, its efforts to address societal challenges, and anecdotes from its founding.

Igniting Passion for Microalgae through "Euglena for ALL"

Through "Euglena for ALL," students had the chance to witness the enthusiasm of researchers dedicated to exploring the immense potential encapsulated within the small microalgae, Euglena. The event aimed to provide middle and high school students in Malaysia with the impetus to view the world's challenges from a researcher's perspective and to consider tackling these issues. The Euglena research team will continue its commitment to advancing bio-related research and development, as well as nurturing local university students and researchers.
